Make the Time: Graciela Iturbide at the MFA Boston

From January 19th– May 12ththe Museum of Fine Arts in Boston will have Graciela Iturbide’s Mexico on view. Often compared to the literary style of Magic Realism epitomized in the work of Gabriel García Márquez, Iturbide’s work combines realism and fantasy. Her photographs are loaded with the contradictions that exist in the combination of traditional Mexican culture and modern everyday life. Iturbide’s Mujer Ángel, Desierto de Sonora, México (Angel Woman, Sonora Desert, Mexico), a photograph of a Seri woman wearing traditional clothes floating through the desert with a boom box in her hand, appears to capture a parallel universe. This is to say nothing of the formal beauty of the images and the technical skill with which they are printed. This show is a must-see.
