The Winchester Psalter: No Way Out

The lavishly illustrated Winchester Psalter likely was created for Henry of Blois, brother of Stephen, King of England, in the 12th century. This manuscript from the Romanesque era has 80 unusual and innovative illustrations, including the frightening scene of an angel locking the gate to hell. In this elaborate image, demons devour people from every social class within the gaping maw of a monster’s head, known in medieval times as a hellmouth.

Consider yourself warned.
